NNC INDEX

Prairies

The Wisconsin DNR has restored about 1,000 acres of prairie on the Navarino Wildlife Area.  The DNR prescribe burn about 500 acres of marsh and prairie fields a year.  This prescribed burning returns nutrients to the soil, as well as setting the area back in succession, by helping to keep trees out.

Prairie programs offer students and adults a chance to walk or ride through a sea of grass, just like the settlers.  Observe and identifying some of the native grasses and wildlife in our prairie habitat.  Each August NNC offers a Prairie Tour looking at the different types of plants, see the Activities & Events for times for the tour.   Stops are scheduled in each prairie so you can get out and observe some of the prairie species, with lunch back along the way.
